So Many Shoes, So Little Time
Even though I’m still in my summer kicks, you’ve certainly noticed all the new, cute fall footwear strolling into the stores. I’m not ready to surrender my flip flops yet, but a few of the new styles definitely warrant a look before fall gets here.
You might notice that some of the hottest trends this year echo a few from last year, like open-toed boots. I didn’t think they really made much of a big splash last season, but they are back in full force and more popular than ever. It’s true that some trends take a couple of seasons to catch on – and this may be one of them. This style is fun, unique and sassy with the right outfit. I think I will have to sport a pair if I can find some with a kitten heel; anything over that one-inch heel and I’m looking elsewhere!
Speaking of different, there is also a lot of buzz about ruffled shoes and booties. A definite change of pace from the menswear-inspired styles of the last few years, these styles range from cute to sexy, but they’re all especially feminine. In addition to ruffles, keep an eye out for other glamorous embellishments like bows, lace and rhinestones. Hey, we’re girls, right? Why not let our toes have a fancy party?
Yet another trend hitting with force this fall are the over-the-knee boots. I prefer my thigh high boots with flat or low heels, and that’s what I’m seeing on most of these ultra-tall boots, although there are plenty of over-the-knee styles for you heel lovers as well. Whichever heel height you prefer, these boots are easy to pull on with skirts, dresses, and of course, skinny jeans.
Just in case you are wondering what color could supplement your wardrobe, this is the second year in a row purple is one of the reigning colors in fall footwear. Not such a fan of violet? You’ll see lots of bright red footwear as well. Both colors are a great way to add a fresh “pop” to your wardrobe or new life to an outfit from last season.
But, just make sure your shoe is the only pop and that you don’t end up matching the rest of your wardrobe to your shoes. (Hint: With your wardrobe, a little purple is good, but moderation in all things). While new shoes are fun, remember, girls can’t live by new trends alone. You should own the basics first, including several pairs of neutral boots. Your boots should reflect your lifestyle, so dial in your heel (short or tall) and your style (casual or dressy) accordingly. If you work in an office environment, you might want to opt for a heel, lending a more sophisticated look to your attire. If you tend to live and work in a more casual atmosphere, your boots can be more relaxed, easy to wear day or evening. I practically live in my boots during the fall, winter and even early spring, so I’m constantly on the hunt for more boot friends to add to my closet collection. I rarely give up a pair unless the heel is big and clunky (only an attractive look for those under 20, or perennial concert goers!)
Another fresh idea? If you don’t have a pair yet, find yourself a cute pair of cowboy boots (couldn’t live without mine) and a stylish pair of snow boots. (You can still be cute, even tromping to your car and back through thigh-high snowdrifts!) Once you have your basics, add some trendy colors or styles to your collection. Go ahead and pick up that thigh high pair, or those short booties with the rhinestones.
One final note: I can never stress the care of your boots and shoes enough. Take care of them and they will last. I can recommend skimping and saving on many wardrobe items, but good boots are something I will spend money on. Because I spend those precious dollars, I take very good care of them. Before I put my winter wheels away, I carefully inspect and assess their condition. It’s amazing what a little love and care can do to prepare these beauties for the next season. Some I will take to the cobbler to be resoled, cleaned, conditioned & polished. It’s definitely worth the effort and the cost! So when your toes start to chill and you realize it is time to tuck away those strappy sandals and fun flip flops, hit Bend’s amazing shoe stores with your colder weather wardrobe in mind. Who knows, maybe you’re ready for a little purple this year?
