Fear Not the Skinny Jeans!
If there are two words that can strike fear in many of my clients, it would have to be “skinny jeans.” But as we head into spring, there’s a rainbow styles and colors of skinny jeans out there, and no reason to be left out of this fun trend that shows no sign of slowing.
You won’t be surprised to hear me say, the key to wearing any style is all about letting go of your fears, and understanding how to dress your body type. There was no better example than last month when a fabulous group of friends got together for one of my “Look Lesson” parties.
“I could NEVER wear skinny jeans,” said Stephanie as she stood in all her 6-foot-glory. “Me neither,” agreed petite 5’4″, Ann-Marie. In fact, not a single woman in the room confessed to wearing (or feeling comfortable in) this form-fitting style.
In a very “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” moment, I offered up the very jeans off my body with the belief Stephanie just hadn’t met the right pair of pants. In a bit of presto-chango, Stephanie put on my jeans, then literally the shirt off my back to see herself in a whole new light. The whole outfit looked fabulous.
Not to be left out, Ann-Marie wanted to try: the jeans, the sweater, the necklace. They all worked on her much different body type too. Then blonde and athletic Linda, who was right in the middle of Stephanie and Ann-Marie, tried them on. The style worked on four very different body types, including me. They all looked amazing!
So what did we learn?
Skinny jeans are nothing to be afraid of. Whether your budget is small, or you can splurge on a designer brand, find a pair of jeans that FIT you properly and a tunic/sweater that is the right length and, voila! you look smashing.
Skinny jeans are an opportunity to show off your best assets. Remember the length of your boot matters. If you’re tall, a higher boot works. If you’re more petite, a shorter profile boot will elongate your legs.
Be mindful of what you’re wearing on top. Most people prefer to wear something long to cover their derriere, and the reason this particular outfit worked on all 3 very different figures is because the sweater was fitted at the bottom and could be set at the right length for each person. It’s all about proportion.
Don’t underestimate the magic of a good pair of skinny jeans, worn with confidence!
